Zachary Moss Howlett is Associate Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the National University of Singapore. His research investigates meritocracy, mobility, and education in China and Chinese diasporas.

His ethnographic work examines how students navigate educational pathways amid shifting geopolitical landscapes. Recent publications analyze Singapore's emergence as an educational hub for Chinese students avoiding Western destinations and explore how academically outperforming Chinese daughters negotiate patriarchal family structures.
He has testified before the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission and serves on the board of the Society for East Asian Anthropology.
