Zachary Hood is a Research Fellow at Argonne National Laboratory, specializing in materials for energy storage and conversion. He holds a BS in Chemistry and German from Wake Forest University (summa cum laude, 2013), followed by a PhD from Georgia Tech (2018) under Prof. Younan Xia. Notable roles include a postdoc at MIT and internships at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research focuses on solid-state ion conductors for Li/Sodium batteries, innovative synthesis methods, and multi-scale material characterization.
- Education:
- Bachelor’s: Wake Forest University, Chemistry & German (2013)
- PhD: Georgia Institute of Technology (2018)
His research interests emphasize sustainable energy materials, particularly solid-state electrolytes for next-generation batteries. He combines synthetic innovation with advanced characterization techniques across nano-to-macro scales. Beyond science, he actively engages in global outreach, co-founding Wake Forest’s Students Helping Honduras chapter and participating in initiatives like the US-Pakistan Startup Initiative.
Recipient of prestigious awards, including the Materials Research Society’s Gold Graduate Student Award and the Argonne Maria Goeppert Mayer Fellowship. His contributions bridge academic rigor and societal impact, as highlighted by Dr. Abdou Lachgar’s praise for his mentorship and dedication to advancing young scientists.
Current work at Argonne National Lab advances materials science for energy applications, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches to tackle challenges in battery technology.
