Zachary Cohen

Zachary Cohen, MD is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. He serves as Associate Geropsychiatry Fellowship Training Director and works clinically in multiple settings including UNC Psychiatry’s outpatient clinic, UNC Neurology’s cognitive disorders clinic, Huntington’s Disease clinics, and The Cedars of Chapel Hill retirement community.

• Education: MD from Brown University

Dr. Cohen specializes in Geriatric Psychiatry with academic and clinical interests in treating insomnia in older adults and managing behavioral symptoms of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s Disease and Huntington’s Disease. His research spans sleep medicine, psychiatric disorders in aging populations, and neuroimaging studies of mental health conditions.

Recent publications highlight his work on sleep patterns in pregnancy, insomnia in psychiatric disorders, and circadian rhythm disruptions. He is actively involved in establishing UNC’s new geriatric psychiatry fellowship under Dr. Amy Abramowitz.

Dr. Cohen also contributes to clinical education and training programs, while maintaining active roles in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) services and geriatric psychiatry fellowships.
