Zachary Abernathy
Professor of Mathematics at Winthrop University's Department of Mathematics, Zachary Abernathy holds a dual B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from Wake Forest University (2006) and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from North Carolina State University (2011). He joined Winthrop in 2011 and currently directs the Bachelor of Arts in Data Science program. His research focuses on infectious disease modeling, machine learning applications, and dynamical systems.
Abernathy has mentored over 50 undergraduate students in research projects involving cancer treatment models and RNA-based biosensor design. He also serves as an Educational Data Scientist for the Department of Institutional Effectiveness, supporting university initiatives in recruitment, academic planning, and automated reporting through data science methodologies.
He maintains active involvement in research grants and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects bridging mathematics, data science, and industry applications. His work emphasizes practical solutions in education, healthcare, and scientific domains using advanced analytical techniques.
