Zach Whalen is an Associate Professor at the University of Mary Washington, affiliated with the Department of English, Linguistics and Communication. He directs the Minor in Digital Studies and teaches courses in electronic literature, video games, graphic novels, and creative coding.

His research focuses on digital humanities, electronic literature, and creative coding. Recent work explores computational art, media archaeology, and the cultural impact of video games. He has also published on algorithmic literature and the pedagogical applications of object-based learning.
While the most recent publications (2023-2024) demonstrate his ongoing interest in critical media art and digital minimalism, earlier works (2019-2021) emphasize generative writing, collaborative authorship, and experimental pedagogy in digital studies.
