معرفی
Yvonne Nolan is a Professor in Anatomy and Neuroscience at University College Cork (UCC), serving as a Funded Investigator in APC Microbiome Ireland and Vice Dean of Graduate Studies in the College of Medicine and Health. She holds dual roles as a researcher and academic leader, advancing both scientific discovery and graduate education.
Dr. Nolan earned her BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and PhD in Neuropharmacology from NUI Galway. Her postdoctoral training included visiting scholar positions at McGill University (Canada) and Trinity College Dublin. She joined UCC in 2003 as a Lecturer, advancing to Senior Lecturer (2011) and Professor (2020).
Her research focuses on how lifestyle factors (exercise, stress, diet) impact brain health across the lifespan, emphasizing neuroinflammation, hippocampal neurogenesis, and the gut microbiome. Key themes include Alzheimer’s/Parkinson’s disease mechanisms, adolescent brain resilience, and translational interventions like exercise and marine-derived nutraceuticals.
Dr. Nolan has supervised over 40 PhD/MSc researchers and secured €6M+ in grants from SFI, the Weston Trust, and industry partners. Awards include UCC’s 2016 Research Supervisor of the Year and a Society for Neuroscience Professional Development Award.
As Vice Dean, she champions student-centered graduate education, fostering curiosity-driven research to address global health challenges. Her leadership extends to national initiatives like the ICAT program and public engagement via conferences, media, and educational outreach (e.g., ‘Brainpower’ online course).
Research highlights include identifying exercise as a mitigator of neuroinflammation, demonstrating gut microbiota’s role in cognitive aging, and exploring music therapy for Down Syndrome. Collaborations span academia and industry (e.g., Marigot Ltd., Vasogen Inc.).
