Yvonne Maria Werner is a Professor at the Department of History within Lund University's Faculty of Humanities and Theology. Based in room LUX:A426 at Helgonavägen 3, Lund, she maintains an active research and teaching profile with upcoming engagements scheduled through 2025. Her institutional affiliations include membership in Vetenskapssocieteten (The Scientific Society) in Lund and the Karl Johan Society in Uppsala, and she has served on the Swedish Research Council's review panel for historical sciences for nearly a decade.
Professor Werner's research primarily focuses on Nordic Catholic cultural history during the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular emphasis on gender dimensions, religious conversion, and transnational religious networks. Her work examines how Catholicism re-established itself in the Nordic region, analyzing Catholic missions through the lens of gender, identity, and cultural counter-movements. She has developed thematic courses exploring the interplay between religion, politics, gender, and society from medieval times to the present day.
Her scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with themes of religious identity formation, particularly examining how Catholic nuns contributed to mission work as an alternative emancipation strategy, and how masculinity intersected with religious identity in Northern Europe. This research trajectory demonstrates an evolving focus from institutional religious history toward more nuanced analyses of gender and identity within religious contexts.
