Yves Filion is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Queen's University, affiliated with the Beaty Water Research Centre. He holds a Ph.D. (2006), M.A.Sc. (2001), and B.A.Sc. (1997) in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto. As a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, his research focuses on water distribution systems analysis, antibiotic resistance in drinking water biofilms, and infrastructure optimization. He is an Associate Editor of the ASCE Journal of Water Resources Planning & Management and has held leadership roles in water resources conferences.
Research interests include:
- Water resources infrastructure engineering
- Environmental engineering and related engineering
- Wastewater treatment processes
- Hydrology and water quality
- Mechanisms of antibiotic resistance dissemination
- Hydraulic modeling of urban water systems
His work bridges engineering and public health, addressing challenges like microbial resistance via biofilm studies and developing decision-support tools for water utilities. Recent studies explore particle dynamics in pipes, energy efficiency in distribution systems, and climate change adaptation strategies.
Teaching includes advanced courses in municipal hydraulics and environmental geochemistry. Filion’s publications span over 20 years, emphasizing reproducible research and interdisciplinary solutions to water infrastructure challenges.
