Yves Bergeron is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), with significant affiliations at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT). His career spans nearly four decades since joining UQAM as a young professor in 1985, during which he has profoundly influenced forest ecology and management practices in Quebec and Canada. Bergeron co-founded the Groupe de recherche en écologie forestière (GREF), which evolved into the Centre d'étude de la Forêt (CEF), a strategic research group funded by FRQ that brings together nearly all Quebec research organizations in forest ecology and management.
Bergeron's research focuses on understanding natural forest dynamics, particularly in boreal environments, with emphasis on fire regimes, forest succession, and the impacts of climate change. His work at the Forêt d'enseignement et de recherche du lac Duparquet (FERLD), an 80 km² research forest he helped establish, has provided critical insights into natural disturbance patterns and forest ecosystem dynamics. This research formed the foundation for developing ecosystem-based forest management approaches that have been adopted across Canada.
His publications reveal a consistent trajectory of increasingly complex research, moving from foundational studies of forest classification and fire history to contemporary work on climate change adaptation and wildfire management. The most recent articles (2023-2024) focus on extreme wildfire events, climate adaptation strategies, and integrated assessments of climate impacts on Quebec's forests, demonstrating his continued relevance to pressing environmental challenges. His work bridges academic research with practical forest management applications, influencing policy and practice throughout his career.
Bergeron has received recognition through extensive collaboration networks, including the International Laboratory on Cold Forests (https://forets-froides.org) which he helped create. His research has directly influenced Quebec's forest management policies, particularly following the 'Commission d'étude sur la gestion de la forêt publique québécoise' (2004) and in response to concerns raised by the film 'L'Erreur boréale.'
Throughout his career, Bergeron has maintained a strong commitment to mentoring advanced students and collaborating with academic, industrial, and government partners. His work exemplifies the integration of long-term ecological research with practical forest management solutions, particularly in the context of increasing climate change pressures on boreal ecosystems.
