Yuwen Zhang is a Curators' Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Missouri, where he served as department chair from 2013 to 2017. He joined the university in 2003 after teaching at New Mexico State University and gaining industry experience, teaching core courses including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and gas dynamics.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from University of Connecticut (1998)
- D.Eng. from Xi'an Jiaotong University
- M.S. from Xi'an Jiaotong University
- B.S. from Xi'an Jiaotong University
Professor Zhang's research focuses on fundamental and applied heat and mass transfer phenomena, with significant contributions to thermal management systems, energy conversion technologies, and manufacturing processes. His work bridges theoretical modeling with practical applications in energy storage, electronics cooling, and sustainable energy systems, resulting in over 500 technical publications including 300+ archival journal papers and seven authoritative books.
His scientific recognition includes:
- MU Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity
- COE Senior Faculty Research Award
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
- Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
- Fellow of the Asian Society for Thermal Sciences and Engineering (ASTFE)
Professor Zhang maintains extensive professional service as editor-in-chief, associate editor, and editorial board member for leading thermal/fluids journals, and organizes major international conferences in his field. His leadership extends to mentoring early-career researchers and shaping research directions through editorial and conference roles.
