Dr. Yusuf Çelik is an Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holding dual appointments in the Faculty of Religion and Theology (Religious Sources Department) and the Network Institute. He completed his PhD in Qur'anic Hermeneutics at the University of Edinburgh (2020).
His research focuses on Islamic theology, particularly Qur'anic exegesis and its intersections with modern challenges like artificial intelligence ethics. He leads projects such as the Qur'an Footprint Tracker analyzing legal texts, and investigates topics like divine love in Islamic thought and religious language in climate discourse.
He teaches courses including Digital Hermeneutics and Research Lab in Analytic Methodologies, and actively engages in interdisciplinary initiatives like the Professionalisation Programme for Imams in the Netherlands.
Recent recognitions include the NWO VENI Grant (2024) for mapping Jewish-Islamic traditions and a Network Institute Grant (2023) for studying religious discourse online. His work bridges traditional theology with computational methods and contemporary societal issues.
