Dr. Shen's research focuses on empirical corporate finance with core expertise in ESG, CSR, natural experiments, and CEO characteristics. She investigates money laundering, anti-money laundering, gambling in finance, and conducts systematic literature reviews, frequently leveraging exogenous shocks to identify causal relationships in corporate financial decisions. Her methodological rigor bridges theoretical and practical applications in finance.
Recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate strong emphasis on systematic reviews of liquidity and default risk, alongside innovative studies on shareholder activism in sustainability, CEO narcissism, and necro-branding. These works integrate finance, accounting, and sustainability through natural experiments and CEO attribute analysis, revealing interdisciplinary trends in contemporary corporate finance research.
She has secured multiple research projects including ESG natural experiments, capital structure determinants, and CEO impact studies on firm innovation and debt/equity performance. Collaborations with Professors Linnenluecke and Smith reflect active grant funding and scholarly teamwork across six projects, four of which are currently active.
As a core member of the Centre for Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Finance, Dr. Shen contributes to research initiatives advancing sustainable finance practices and environmental stewardship in corporate decision-making, particularly through natural experiment methodologies.
