Yuliyan Mitkov is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Bonn, affiliated with the Institute for Finance & Statistics. His research focuses on financial economics, banking, and macroeconomics, particularly exploring topics such as financial fragility, income inequality, debt maturity, and regulatory policy. He is a co-PI in the CRC TR 224 EPoS and part of the ECONtribute research initiative. Mitkov’s work challenges conventional views on financial stability and bank fragility, proposing innovative frameworks for liquidity creation and risk management. He will join the Department of Finance at the University of Vienna in summer 2024.
His research interests include systemic risk, bank regulation, and the interplay between inequality and financial stability. He has contributed to understanding mechanisms like bail-ins, bailouts, and coordination failures in financial markets. His methodologies span game theory, mechanism design, and survival analysis to model complex economic interactions.
Mitkov’s articles analyze topics such as debt maturity’s role in innovation, the impact of common ownership on competition, and the design of optimal banking structures. His current projects address partial deposits, the ‘bail-in game,’ and anticompetitive effects of loan covenants. Despite no listed awards, his work is widely cited in financial economics and macroeconomic theory.
