Dr. Yuichi Tsukada is an Associate Professor of English Literature at Waseda University, Japan, with a focus on Shakespearean studies and early modern cultural politics. He holds a PhD from King’s College London, an MA from The University of Tokyo, and a BA in British Area Studies from the same institution. His research interrogates the interplay between Shakespearean drama, Elizabethan nostalgia, and political identity in Jacobean England.
His scholarly output spans analyses of Macbeth's prophecies, Coriolanus' gendered military allegory, and Antony and Cleopatra's negotiation of Elizabethan legacy. He has held grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Suntory Foundation, and serves as Director-General of the Kanto Branch of the English Literary Society of Japan.
Key publications include the monograph Shakespeare and the Politics of Nostalgia (Arden Shakespeare, 2019), which recontextualizes Shakespeare’s late plays within Jacobean debates about Elizabeth I. His work has been recognized with the University of Tokyo President’s Grand Award and the Young Scholar Award of Special Merit from the English Literary Society of Japan.
