Yuehan Lu is a Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Alabama. His research focuses on biogeochemical cycling of organic matter, human impacts on water quality, and paleoenvironmental reconstructions using biomarkers and isotopic analyses. He holds a PhD in Oceanography from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and completed a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences.
Education includes a BS and MS from Zhejiang University (China) in Geology/Geochemistry and Environmental Sciences, respectively. His work combines field studies, laboratory analyses, and modeling to address contemporary and paleo-environmental questions.
Research interests include terrestrial-aquatic linkages, watershed exports of dissolved organic matter, and the effects of coal mining on groundwater quality. He employs techniques like biomarker analysis, stable isotope geochemistry, and FTICR-MS.
Current students include Man Lu (PhD, 2015–present), Shuo Chen (PhD, 2016–present), and Olivia Warren (MS, 2017–present). Previous advisees have contributed to studies on watershed dynamics, paleontology, and environmental chemistry. Dr. Lu has hosted visiting scholars from China and collaborated internationally on projects like the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program.
