Dr. Yue Bian serves as an Associate Professor and ESOL Program Coordinator at the University of Washington Bothell's School of Educational Studies. Her academic journey spans from Nankai University in China to the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, where she developed expertise in teacher education for multilingual learners.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education from Michigan State University, an M.A. in Educational Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a B.A. in English from Nankai University in Tianjin, China. This diverse educational foundation supports her transnational perspective on education.
Dr. Bian's research focuses on culturally and linguistically responsive teacher education practices, particularly examining how to prepare educators to work effectively with emergent multilingual students. As a transnational and bilingual scholar herself, she pays special attention to the experiences of teachers and teacher educators from multilingual backgrounds, especially first-generation immigrants navigating the U.S. education system.
Her publication record reveals a consistent focus on teacher preparation for English language learners, transnational educator experiences, and linguistically responsive pedagogy. The research shows an evolution from examining pre-service teacher preparation to exploring the identity development of transnational educators themselves, with recent work addressing multilingual implications for reading assessment and creating inclusive teacher education programs.
Dr. Bian actively secures research funding, currently serving as PI or Co-PI on multiple grants totaling over $250,000, including a Spencer Foundation Vision Grant and UW Bothell seed grants focused on culturally relevant teacher preparation. She teaches multiple ESOL courses including Second Language Acquisition, Curriculum and Instruction in ESOL, and Practicum in ESOL, directly applying her research to teacher preparation.
Her work demonstrates a strong commitment to diversifying the teaching workforce and creating equitable educational opportunities for multilingual learners through both research and practice.
