Yubo Qi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he joined in August 2023. His research program focuses on developing machine-learning-based computational methods and data-driven approaches for functional materials discovery.
Dr. Qi's research interests include:
- Density functional theory
- Ferroelectrics
- Charge-ordering systems
- Computational methods development
- Machine learning in physics
Prior to joining UAB, Dr. Qi completed his Ph.D. in theoretical physical chemistry in 2017 from the University of Pennsylvania under Professor Andrew Rappe. He then conducted postdoctoral research at Rutgers University working with Professor Karin Rabe on novel functional materials, particularly thin-film ferroelectrics and charge/spin ordering systems. Following this, he moved to Northeastern University to work with Professor Qimin Yan applying machine-learning techniques to solve physics problems.
Dr. Qi earned his B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His office is located in East Science Hall 4109, and he maintains office hours on Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00 p.m., with additional appointments available as needed.
