Dr. Yuanping Fang is an Associate Professor in Human Geography at South China Normal University and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. He serves as Deputy Director of the Urban and Regional Development Studies Center at South China Normal University and is affiliated with the Chinese Geography Society and Guangdong Province's Service Industry Research Academy.
His education includes a Ph.D. (2004) in Urban Geography and Urban Planning, an M.Sc. (2001) in Human and Cultural Geography, and a B.A. (1998) in Geography Science. His career spans academic roles since 2006, including urban planning engineering at the Guangzhou Urban Planning & Urban Design Institute (2004–2006).
Research focuses on service geography, urban transformation, ICT impacts on innovation, creative industries, and regional planning. Notable studies include analyses of service industries in Guangdong Province, KIBS innovation, and the spatial dynamics of Guangzhou's urban regeneration.
Publications (over 40 books/papers) emphasize service economies, ICT-driven innovation, and urban policy. Key works include Service Industrial Location Theory (2008) and studies on Guangzhou’s transition to a global city.
His work bridges academic research with policy, addressing urban development challenges in China and comparative studies with UK cities. Current projects explore service innovation, industrial upgrading, and the socio-spatial impacts of urban renewal.
