Yuan Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Iowa State University, where she leads The Zhang Lab. Her research pioneers synthetic methodologies for bioactive molecules, focusing on three areas: peripheral/scaffold modifications of heterocyclic pharmaceuticals, concise total synthesis of polycyclic natural products, and development of novel catalytic systems for selective functionalization.
She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago (2020) and completed postdoctoral training at MIT (2020-2024), following an M.S. and B.S. in Medicinal Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Science from Peking University. Her lab integrates organic synthesis, reaction development, and mechanistic studies to address challenges in molecular complexity and drug discovery. She actively collaborates with academia and industry to advance scientific innovation.
Zhang has made significant contributions to natural product synthesis (e.g., laurendecumallene B, manginoid A) and developed stereochemical editing techniques for complex molecule manipulation. Her SARS-CoV-2 protease research informs antiviral drug design. She mentors students in multistep synthesis and catalytic design for diverse career paths.
