YuMing Zhang is the James R. Boyd Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Kentucky's Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering. He has held this position since 2005, preceded by roles as Associate Professor (1998-2005) and Visiting Scholar (1991-1998). Dr. Zhang's research focuses on applied machine vision, control systems, robotic welding, and manufacturing processes, with a strong emphasis on integrating deep learning and robotics into welding automation.
Education: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering/Welding Major (Harbin Institute of Technology), M.S. and B.S. in Electrical Engineering/Control Major (Harbin Institute of Technology).
His research interests include real-time weld monitoring, human-robot collaboration in manufacturing, and advanced welding technologies. Notable contributions include developing GAN-based models for weld pool dynamics and deep learning frameworks for adaptive welding control. He currently serves as Director of International Partnerships (2016–2024) and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, with a focus on predictive control, sensor integration, and machine learning applications.
Scientific Achievements: IEEE Fellow (2016), recipient of numerous awards for contributions to intelligent welding manufacturing and automation. His work bridges robotics, materials science, and data analytics to advance manufacturing systems.
Grants and Advising: Active in securing research funding for projects related to robotic welding and digital twin technologies. Supervised multiple graduate students in interdisciplinary engineering fields.
