Yu Zhang Stearns is an Associate Professor of Chinese at Loyola University Maryland. She specializes in late imperial Chinese literature, including poetry, vernacular fiction, and tanci fiction, with a focus on the intersection of gender, text, and religion at the turn of the twentieth century.
Her research investigates the cultural and social significance of interfamily tanci writing in nineteenth-century China, as detailed in her book Interfamily Tanci Writing in Nineteenth Century China: Bonds and Boundaries (Lexington Press, 2018). She also explores how gender and religious themes are interwoven in vernacular literary traditions during this period.
At Loyola, Dr. Zhang Stearns teaches Mandarin Chinese and courses on Chinese literature, film, and gender issues in East Asia. Outside of academia, she enjoys cooking, reading detective stories, and exploring local walking trails. For inquiries, she can be reached at yzstearns@loyola.edu or by phone at 410-617-2507.
