Yu Tao

Dr. Yu Tao is an Associate Professor in Chinese Studies at the University of Western Australia (UWA), where he coordinates the Chinese Studies program. He holds a BA from Peking University, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, and a DPhil from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on Global China, examining governance adaptation and transnational Chineseness across religion, education, migration, and heritage. He served as Discipline Chair of Asian Studies (2022-2023) and currently oversees Honours training. A multi-award-winning educator, he received the Australian Award for University Teaching and the UWA Award for Excellence in Teaching. He edits Asian Studies Review and is a fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and Royal Asiatic Society.

Research interests: Global China's governance dynamics, religion-civil society-state interactions, and education policy. He explores how local agencies navigate globalization, including religious groups' roles in multicultural urban neighborhoods. Articles Trends: Recent works analyze Chinese students' electoral engagement, post-pandemic craft industries, and religious activism. Themes include transnational identity, policy adaptation, and pedagogical innovation.
