Yousif M. Qasmiyeh is a DPhil candidate in the Faculty of English at the University of Oxford, specializing in Refugee Writing with a focus on conceptualizations of time and containment. He holds dual academic roles as an Arabic Lector at the Oxford University Language Centre and a researcher in comparative literature and translation studies.
His educational journey began in Baddawi refugee camp’s UN school system, followed by undergraduate and postgraduate studies in English Literature at the Lebanese University. Before arriving in the UK, he taught full-time in UNRWA schools in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. After relocating to the UK, he faced years of statelessness before securing asylum and returning to academia.
Qasmiyeh’s research bridges literary analysis with lived experiences of displacement, emphasizing multilingual and Southern-centric approaches. He co-leads the Baddawi Camp Lab (Imagining Futures Project) and collaborates with the Refugee Hosts initiative, conducting fieldwork across Lebanon and Jordan. His creative output includes poetry collections like Writing the Camp (2021), which explores camp life and displacement aesthetics.
Teaching roles include supervising MPhil students at the Oriental Institute and co-teaching ‘Authoritarianism in Contemporary Arabic Literature’. He has organized major academic events such as the Oxford Translation Day and Translational Spaces Conference. His work intersects with NGOs supporting asylum seekers, and his poetry features in prestigious venues like the Venice Biennale.
