Dr. Young In Hong is a Senior Lecturer in Performance and Textiles at Bath Spa University's Bath School of Art, Film and Media. Since 2019, she co-leads the Material/Performing research group within the institution's Art Research Centre (ARC). Her practice spans textile, performance, installation, and sound, focusing on historical narratives, endangered crafts, and interspecies equality through non-linguistic communication.
- PhD in Art, Goldsmiths College, London (2011)
- MA in Fine Art, Goldsmiths College, London (2000)
- BA in Sculpture, Seoul National University (1996)
Her research integrates three key strands:
- Textile Revival: Collaborations with straw-weaving masters in Korea, India, and the UK to preserve endangered crafts.
- Performance Inquiry: Flashmob structures as studies in self-organization and community dynamics.
- Abstract Language: Inspired by animal behavior and suppressed narratives of working women.
Recent works like Five Acts & A Monologue (2025) and Ring of Animals (2023) demonstrate her focus on ritualistic dimensions and decentralized knowledge production. Her textile practice merges historical iconography with contemporary social commentary, while performances like Meta-hierarchical Exercise (2022) investigate power structures through embodied action.
Scientific awards include the Kimsechoong Art Prize (2011) and shortlisting for the Korea Artist Prize (2019). She holds a Higher Education Academy Fellowship (FHEA) and has been recognized for merging artistic process with socio-political critique.
