Young-Il Kim is an Associate Professor of Sociology at George Fox University, where he has taught since 2017. Before joining George Fox, he served as a postdoctoral scholar and research assistant professor at Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion. His research explores how family structures and voluntary associations influence generosity and social solidarity, with a focus on religion, marital dynamics, and civic engagement. Kim holds a PhD from the University of Virginia (2010), an MA from Yonsei University (2001), and a BA from Yonsei University (1999).
His research interests include the sociology of family, religion, volunteering, and social trust. Notable publications appear in Social Science Research, Social Science Quarterly, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and Review of Religious Research. His work has been funded by the Fatherhood Research and Practice Network and covered by major media outlets like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Kim’s recent studies, including evaluations of fatherhood programs, emphasize applied research to address social issues. He maintains a strong commitment to teaching, particularly mentoring students like Isaak Swan, and integrates practical research into his pedagogical approach.
