Dr. Yookyeong Im is a Lecturer in Korean Studies at the University of Sheffield, affiliated with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies. Her research focuses on law, gender, sexuality, and social movements in contemporary Korea, particularly exploring the role of legal advocacy in South Korean queer activism since the 2000s. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from Harvard University, an MA in Anthropology from Seoul National University, and a BA in Sociology from Yonsei University.
Her work bridges legal anthropology, queer feminist praxis, and the judicialization of social movements. She examines how law interacts with discrimination, political aspirations, and queer political imaginations. Current projects include a book manuscript analyzing the judicialization of queer activism in South Korea.
Teaching interests span modern Korean history, sexuality and citizenship, and interdisciplinary approaches to Korea, incorporating methods from anthropology, history, and legal studies. She emphasizes community-engaged pedagogy, linking academic knowledge to civic engagement. Her research has been supported by the Social Science Research Council, Wenner-Gren Foundation, and Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies.
