Yongsheng Chen

Yongsheng Chen is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Director of the MR Core Research Facility (MRRF), with an adjunct Graduate Faculty Appointment in Biomedical Engineering. His research develops quantitative MRI methods for brain and peripheral nerve disorders, focusing on clinical applications in neurodegenerative diseases and neuropathies.

Dr. Chen pioneered the Strategically Acquired Gradient Echo (STAGE) imaging technique for rapid multiparametric brain MRI and developed novel quantitative methods for peripheral nerve assessment. His work targets neurodegenerative disorders (Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis) and peripheral neuropathies, with NIH-funded projects developing biomarkers for inherited nerve diseases and diagnostic signatures to differentiate demyelination from axonal degeneration.

Recent publications (2023-2024) reveal three dominant research thrusts: (1) Advanced STAGE/CROWN processing for enhanced signal-to-noise in quantitative MRI; (2) High-field (7T) vascular and iron imaging for neurodegenerative disease biomarkers; (3) Multiparametric nerve MRI for polyneuropathy characterization. Key applications span Parkinson's neuromelanin mapping, MS lesion analysis, and peripheral nerve demyelination assessment.

He advises Ph.D. students through his Biomedical Engineering appointment and secures research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Wayne State University. His laboratory develops clinical translation pathways for quantitative MRI biomarkers in neurological disorders.

The MR Core Research Facility under his direction serves as a central hub for advanced MRI research across Wayne State and the Michigan Tri-corridor region, supporting both campus-wide neuroscience initiatives and regional clinical collaborations.
