Yongping Zhu is an Associate Professor and Chinese Language Program Coordinator at the University of Notre Dame's Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Specializing in historical Chinese syntax and pedagogical methods, he teaches Chinese language and culture while researching second language acquisition and functional word development.
Education includes a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (2002), M.A. from Shaanxi Normal University, and teaching certificates from Seoul National University. Previously taught at Princeton University, Washington University in St. Louis, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Research examines acquisition challenges in Chinese verb complements, logical inference in curriculum design, and character formation influences on functional words. Recent publications focus on grammar pedagogy innovations and linked-data approaches to Chinese instruction. His 15 most recent works show consistent emphasis on pedagogical applications of linguistic research.
Awarded the Joyce Prize for Undergraduate Teaching (2021). As CLTA President (2021-2022), he shaped national Chinese language education standards. Oversees Notre Dame's Peking University summer program and advises doctoral students in second language acquisition.
Developed textbook series including 'Experiencing China: Intermediate Chinese' and 'Approaching China: Elementary Chinese' published by Peking University Press.
