Yongcan Liu is a Professor of Applied Linguistics and Languages Education at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Education. He holds roles including Director of the Refugee Language Education Unit (Cambridge Refugee Hub) and Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Global Human Movement. His work focuses on multilingualism in migration contexts, heritage language education, and teacher knowledge development.
He holds a PhD in Second Language Education from the University of Cambridge, alongside international qualifications from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. His research integrates sociocultural theory and pedagogical design, addressing challenges faced by migrant children in education. Key projects include Bell Foundation-funded studies on EAL children's language development and the acclaimed 'EAL Assessment Framework for Schools'.
Research interests span heritage language identity, multilingual pedagogy, teacher professional communities, and assessment frameworks. He leads initiatives like the Cambridge Research in Community Language Education Network (CRiCLE-Net) and the Language, Heritage, Migration Initiative. His work bridges academic research with practical educational policy, emphasizing equitable language education in diverse contexts.
