Dr. Yong Zhang is a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC). He serves as assistant to the director of the Institute, director of the Polio Department, and principal investigator of the Key Laboratory of Biosafety under the National Health Commission and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he holds a part-time researcher position at the Joint Research Center for Diseases and Biosafety and instructs China's field epidemiology training program.
His research centers on virology with emphasis on enteroviruses (particularly Enterovirus A71 and poliovirus), molecular evolution, and associated diseases including hand, foot, and mouth disease. He employs genomic analysis, phylogenetic modeling, and animal infection systems to investigate viral pathogenesis, transmission dynamics, and strain evolution across China and globally. His work bridges laboratory biosafety and field epidemiology to address emerging viral threats.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal consistent focus on enterovirus molecular characterization, vaccine-derived poliovirus surveillance, and coxsackievirus pathogenesis. As a doctoral supervisor, Dr. Zhang mentors graduate students in virology research while leading the Polio Department and Key Laboratory of Biosafety.
