Yohei Kakinuma is a Professor at Waseda University's Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, where he has served since 2021. He also directs Waseda University's Yangzi River Valley Culture Research Institute. Previously, he was an Associate Professor at Waseda University (2020-2021) and Teikyo University (2015-2020), where he taught in the Department of History.

Dr. Kakinuma received his Ph.D. from Waseda University in 2009, following earlier studies at Waseda University and the University of Birmingham. His academic journey includes postdoctoral research with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and a visiting scholar position at the Chinese Social Academy Research Institute of History.
Dr. Kakinuma specializes in ancient Chinese history with a particular focus on monetary history, economic history, and social history. His research spans multiple Chinese dynasties including the Qin and Han periods, Wei-Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the Sui and Tang periods. He has made significant contributions to understanding ancient Chinese monetary systems, legal frameworks, and daily life practices. His interdisciplinary approach combines historical analysis with insights from anthropology and economics to reveal the complex social and economic structures of ancient China. His work demonstrates how economic practices shaped and were shaped by social structures across dynastic periods.
His extensive publication record reveals patterns of continuity and transformation in Chinese monetary systems, with increasing attention to material culture evidence including ancient tallies, stamps, and manuscripts. Recent research has examined the regional variations in Qin legal practices, Buddhist practices in the Wei-Jin period, and local society structures during the Three Kingdoms period, showing how economic systems intertwined with religious, legal, and social frameworks.
