Yoel Fink

Yoel Fink is the Danae and Vasilis (1961) Salapatas Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. He leads the fibers@mit research group, pioneering multifunctional fiber and fabric technologies. His work integrates nanoscale material engineering with scalable production methods, enabling fibers with optical, electronic, and acoustic functionalities.

Education: B.S. Chemical Engineering (Technion, 1994), B.A. Physics (Technion, 1995), Ph.D. Materials Science (MIT, 2000).

Research focuses on thermally drawn fibers, wearable electronics, and biomedical devices. Notable achievements include rechargeable fiber batteries, in vivo photopharmacology fibers, and fabric-based computing systems. His group has published over 80 papers and holds 60 patents.

Awards include Margaret MacVicar Faculty Fellow (2007), Joseph Lane Teaching Award (2006), and MIT Technology Review TR100 (1999). He co-founded OmniGuide, a medical device company.

Key innovations: 140m fiber batteries, neural interface fibers, and acoustic fabric systems. Collaborates across disciplines to bridge material science, electronics, and biomedical applications.
