Professor Yining Huang is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Western University's Faculty of Science. With a laboratory in Room 0250 MSA and office in Room 17 ChB, Dr. Huang leads an active research group focused on advanced materials characterization and synthesis. His academic journey includes a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Peking University, a Ph.D. from McGill University, and an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Huang's research spans multiple areas within materials chemistry, with particular emphasis on nanoporous materials including zeolites, AlPO4-based molecular sieves, mesoporous materials, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). His work integrates vibrational spectroscopy and solid-state NMR techniques to investigate host-guest interactions, crystallization pathways, and material properties under various conditions. Recent work has expanded into solid-state battery materials, particularly solid electrolytes for lithium and sodium-ion batteries.
The publication record reveals a strong trend toward increasingly sophisticated NMR applications for characterizing complex materials systems, with recent work pushing the boundaries of in-situ monitoring of crystallization processes and developing novel signal enhancement strategies for challenging nuclei like 67Zn. The research shows a clear progression from fundamental studies of porous materials to practical applications in energy storage and environmental technologies.

Dr. Huang has successfully mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, as evidenced by the group photos showing a vibrant research team. His research has attracted significant funding through NSERC Discovery grants and Accelerator Supplements. The research group maintains the J.B. Stothers NMR Facility where much of their solid-state NMR work is conducted, including experiments on the 9.4 T Varian Infinity Plus 400 spectrometer.
Dr. Huang's laboratory operates as a collaborative hub, with multiple ongoing projects investigating crystallization mechanisms, host-guest interactions in porous materials, and advanced battery materials. The group maintains strong collaborations with other researchers including Professor Andy Sun (solid-state Li-ion batteries) and Professor Y. Song (high pressure studies).
