Ying Wang serves as an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Signals and Systems (BSS) group at the University of Twente's Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. Her research pioneers hybrid artificial intelligence integrated with physiological mechanistic models to develop robust, interpretable, and personalized daily-life health monitoring systems that overcome limitations of conventional single-disease digital health technologies.
Her work spans digital health, multimodal sensing, and hybrid AI modeling for applications in stress monitoring, cardiovascular health, rehabilitation, elderly care, and chronic disease management including obesity, osteoarthritis, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. She leads major EU and Dutch-funded projects including SMARTTEST (2025–), Stay Healthy (2023–), Stress-in-Action (2023–), IMPROVE (2023–), and the NWA Osteoarthritis Project (2023–), developing algorithms for energy expenditure tracking, resilience monitoring, and disease-specific biomarker extraction.
Scientific Awards: No specific awards or fellowships were mentioned in the source material.
Wang has supervised six PhD candidates (three ongoing, two starting soon) and over 50 MSc/BSc students across biomedical engineering and related disciplines. Her current €15M+ portfolio includes EU MSCA Doctoral Network SMARTTEST developing child/elderly monitoring systems, Horizon Stay Healthy for obesity prevention, and Dutch Gravitation Programme Stress-in-Action for real-world stress assessment. She actively contributes to national academic governance as a committee member of the Dutch Electrical Engineering Council (EE-NL) and previously served on the University of Twente's Educational Quality and Ethics Committees.
The Ying Wang Research Lab comprises a multidisciplinary team of electrical engineers, data scientists, physiologists, and medical experts collaborating with clinical partners to advance explainable AI for healthcare through physiology-model-based signal processing and human body system modeling.
