معرفی
Dr. Ying Chen is a Professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the Price Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba, Canada. She has served as a faculty member since 1997 and currently holds the position of Associate Head (Graduate Program). She is a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng) and leads the Machinery and Soil Dynamics Lab.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering, McGill University, Canada (1992/1993)
- M.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering, Beijing Agricultural Mechanisation College (now China Agricultural University), China (1984)
- B.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering, Jiamusi Agricultural Machinery College (now Jiamusi University), China (1981/1982)
Her research focuses on conservation agriculture, agricultural machinery, soil dynamics, and discrete element modeling (DEM). She investigates soil-tool interactions, seedling emergence, plant fibre processing, and manure application using advanced computational and experimental methods. Her work bridges engineering principles with agricultural sustainability.
Dr. Chen's recent publications demonstrate a strong trend in applying Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) to simulate complex agricultural systems, including soil heterogeneity, seed flow, fibre processing, and plant-soil-machine interactions. Her research spans broad disciplines such as agricultural engineering, computational mechanics, and sustainable materials.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Fellow of ASABE (2023)
- Fellow of Canadian Society for Bioengineering (CSBE) (2017)
- Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC) (2024)
- CSBE Glenn Downing Award (2006)
- University of Manitoba Merit Award (2019)
- Excellence Award in Engineering Education (2017)
- ASABE Paper Award (2015)
Dr. Chen has been a principal investigator on numerous research grants from NSERC and other agencies. She has trained over 40 graduate students, 10 post-doctoral fellows, and 50 other highly qualified personnel. She actively contributes to professional service, having served as President of CSBE (2021–2022), on the Engineering Program Accreditation Team of Engineers Canada, and on the Board of Trustees of ASABE.
She leads the Machinery and Soil Dynamics Lab at the University of Manitoba, which includes facilities such as a Soil Bin Testing Facility and a Field Tool Tester, supporting both experimental and modeling research in agricultural systems.
