Dr. Larry G. Wells was a dedicated faculty member of the University of Kentucky's Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department for his entire career. Born in 1947 in Falmouth, Kentucky, he earned his B.S. (1969) and M.S. (1971) from the University of Kentucky, followed by a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University (1974). He returned to UK to teach and conduct research, focusing on agricultural machinery design, tobacco mechanization, soil compaction solutions, and mine reclamation. His contributions included over 50 scholarly articles, three U.S. patents, and active involvement in ASABE, leading to prestigious awards like the Sunkist Young Designer of the Year Award (1987) and ASABE Fellow (2014).
Dr. Wells emphasized teaching and mentoring, directing graduate students and contributing to course development in machinery automation. His legacy is honored through the Larry G. Wells Scholarship Fund, supporting Biosystems Engineering students interested in agricultural mechanization. A devout Christian and family man, he was deeply respected for his integrity, leadership, and community involvement with Southland Christian Church.
His research bridged technical innovation with agricultural challenges, emphasizing practical solutions for farm efficiency and environmental stewardship. Though now deceased, his scholarly work and pedagogical impact remain foundational in his field.
