Yin Chen

Yin Chen holds the position of Professor and Chair in Microbial Ecology within the Biosciences department. Currently accepting PhD students, Professor Chen maintains an active research program with recent publications extending into 2025 and multiple ongoing research projects funded by major UK research councils including NERC, BBSRC, and UKRI.

Professor Chen's research spans microbial ecology with particular expertise in marine bacterial systems, membrane lipid composition, nutrient cycling dynamics, and paddy field ecosystems. Key research themes include phosphorus limitation in marine environments, methane-oxidizing bacteria physiology, and the structural variation of microbial communities in response to environmental factors. The research contributes significantly to understanding microbial adaptation in nutrient-limited environments and has implications for climate change mitigation strategies.

Analysis of recent publications reveals consistent focus on microbial community structure in response to environmental stressors, with particular emphasis on phosphorus limitation mechanisms, membrane lipid adaptations, and the interplay between temperature and microbial community composition in agricultural and marine settings. The research demonstrates interdisciplinary approaches combining omics, ecophysiology, and environmental modeling.

Professor Chen currently leads or co-leads four major research projects including EcoMethane (an integrated ecophysiology and omics study of phosphorus limitation in methane-oxidising bacteria), research on membrane lipid remodelling in B. cenocepacia, quantification of anthropogenic nutrient impacts on carbon flux from freshwater lakes, and testing limitations to methanotrophy on tree stems. These projects, funded by UKRI Horizon Europe, BBSRC, and NERC, demonstrate substantial research leadership and grant acquisition capability.
