Pierre Offre

Pierre Offre is a Senior Scientist at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), affiliated with the Department of Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry (MMB). His research spans microbial physiology, biogeochemical cycling, and ecological strategies of marine microorganisms, particularly Archaea and Bacteria.

• PhD in Environmental Microbiology from INRA-Dijon

His work focuses on the nitrogen and carbon cycles, with a special emphasis on ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and the bacterial group Woeseiales (JTB255). These microbes play critical roles in marine nutrient cycling, and he investigates their metabolic traits using physiological experiments, 'omics approaches, and isotopic tracers.

Recent trends in his publications include studies on isoGDGT lipid composition in Thaumarchaeota, microbial responses to hydrothermal plumes, evolutionary phylogenetics of mitochondria, and biogeochemical impacts of Woeseiales bacteria in marine sediments. He also contributes to frameworks for global microbiology education and knowledge dissemination.

Grants include a 2022 NWO-funded project on nitrous oxide production by Woeseiales bacteria. His research teams have conducted fieldwork in the Black Sea and Arctic Ocean, and he has collaborated with institutes in Germany, Sweden, Austria, and the UK. Current affiliations highlight investigations into deep-sea microbial communities and their enzymatic potential for biotechnology.
