Yifei Li is Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at NYU Shanghai and Global Network Assistant Professor at NYU. His research examines China's state-led environmentalism, analyzing societal dynamics within coercive policy frameworks. Funded by the NSF, Luce/ACLS, and Rachel Carson Center, he explores intersections of authoritarian governance, urbanization, and sustainability.
Education includes a PhD in Sociology from University of Wisconsin-Madison, MS in Sociology from UW-Madison, and LL.B. in Sociology from Fudan University.
Research interests center on environmental sociology, Chinese policy innovation, urban sustainability transitions, and global environmental governance. His work reveals how state power reshapes ecological practices amid development pressures.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on China's ecological civilization paradigm, analyzing policy implementation gaps, transnational sustainability certifications, and Belt and Road environmental impacts.
