Dr. Zhang's research focuses on statistical analysis of health risk heterogeneity with particular expertise in gun violence research, physicians' malpractice, drivers' accident risks, and secondary insurance markets. Her work includes constructing extensive databases of firearm purchasers through a five-year collaboration among multiple institutions and government agencies. She has led significant studies showing that Californians living with handgun owners are twice as likely to die by homicide compared to neighbors in gun-free homes.
Dr. Zhang has contributed to important public health research including studies on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in California prisons. Her work bridges statistical methodology with practical health policy applications to address critical public safety issues.
Her research has been featured in prominent publications and media outlets highlighting the relationship between firearm access and mortality risks.
Dr. Zhang previously served as a Research Associate at the Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health before joining Stanford.
