Yehoyada Amir serves as Professor of Modern Jewish Thought at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's Taube Family Campus in Jerusalem. He earned his Ph.D. in Jewish Thought from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1994 and received rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College in 2004.
His academic career includes significant leadership roles: he headed HUC-JIR Israel's rabbinic seminary from 2000-2009, chaired the Council of Progressive Rabbis in Israel (Maram), and served on the boards of Rabbis for Human Rights and the Israel Religious Action Center.
Amir's research focuses on Modern Jewish Thought with particular expertise in the philosophies of Franz Rosenzweig, Nachman Krochmal, and Eliezer Schweid. His scholarly work explores theological reflections, Jewish cultural renewal, and the intersection of traditional Jewish thought with modern philosophical approaches.
His major publications include Reason out of Faith: The Philosophy of Franz Rosenzweig (2004), A Small Still Voice: Theological Critical Reflections (2009), Gates to Pure Faith: Renewal of Jewish life in the Philosophy of Nachman Krochmal (2018), and The Philosophy of Eliezer Schweid: Jewish Culture and Universal Perspectives (2020, co-edited with Yossi Turner).
Through his leadership in progressive Jewish organizations, Amir bridges academic scholarship with practical rabbinical leadership in Israel's progressive Jewish community, advocating for human rights and religious action.
