Yasmin Sassi is a Researcher at the Institute for Special Education within the Faculty of Philosophy at Leibniz University Hannover. She is actively engaged in research and teaching, with a focus on education in migration societies, racism research, postcolonial theory, and inclusive teacher training.
Her educational background includes a BA, MA, and M.Ed. in Special Education from Leibniz University Hannover, with specialized training in speech and communication therapy. She has been working on her doctoral project titled "School, Plurality and Justice: Educational Opportunities of Refugee Children and Young People in the German School System" since 2018.
Dr. Sassi's research employs ethnographic methods, Grounded Theory, and participatory research approaches to examine how educational systems can better serve diverse student populations. Her work specifically investigates the intersection of disability and migration, educational equity, and anti-racism pedagogy, with particular attention to refugee students' experiences in German schools.
Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on systemic barriers in education, with recent publications addressing racism and ableism as interconnected systems of exclusion. Her work shows a clear trajectory from examining specific educational challenges to developing comprehensive frameworks for inclusive teacher training.
Currently, she serves as a research associate in the BMBF-funded project "EmParti: Migrant - female - strong! Empowerment and participation through mentoring for migrant female teacher trainees and teachers" (August 2024 – July 2027). She will be teaching a course titled "Diversity educates: Introduction to anti-racism pedagogy" in the summer semester of 2025.
