Yanyan Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at New Mexico State University (NMSU), serving since August 2022 after progressing from Assistant Professor (2016-2022). Her academic background includes postdoctoral work and lecturing at the University of Alberta, Canada, and graduate research at the University of Missouri.
Her educational credentials:
- Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, 2012, University of Missouri-Columbia
- M.S. in Environmental Engineering, 2008, Beijing Normal University, China
- B.S. in Environmental Engineering, 2005, Beijing Normal University, China
Dr. Zhang's research centers on critical water treatment challenges, with emphasis on pathogen detection/inactivation mechanisms, bacterial biofilm resistance to disinfection, and micro-pollutant transport dynamics in engineered systems. She pioneers integrated biochemical-physicochemical treatment processes and develops toxicity assessment frameworks for safe wastewater reuse, addressing emerging contaminants in water cycles.
Her 2020-2022 publications reveal concentrated expertise in oilfield produced water management (toxicology, biomineralization, nutrient recovery) and antibiotic resistance mitigation through algal-based treatment systems. Key themes include microbial community analysis via metagenomics, hypersaline water remediation, and resource recovery from industrial wastewaters, demonstrating interdisciplinary approaches bridging environmental engineering and microbiology.
