Yann RIVIÈRE is a Professor at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS), specializing in Political and Social History and Judicial Institutions in Ancient Rome from the Republic to Late Antiquity. He has been a Director of Studies at EHESS since 2014 and previously held positions at the French School of Rome and University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin.
His research explores Roman legal systems, including
- Criminal Law evolution
- Exile and detention practices
- Imperial political reforms
- Surveillance mechanisms
Notable trends in his 2017-2022 publications include comparative analysis of Roman dictatorship and modern state of exception models, astrology bans under the Empire, and exile's role in social control. His 2021 monograph History of Roman Criminal Law from Romulus to Justinian won the Charles Aubert Law Prize from the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.
He coordinates scientific works on Roman confiscation practices and contributes to historiographical debates through reviews in L'Histoire magazine. Recent collaborations include exhibitions on Rome et les barbares (Venice, 2008) and De la Grèce à Rome (Finistère, 2009).
