Yanming An is a Professor of Chinese and Philosophy at Clemson University's Department of Languages within the College of Arts and Humanities. He holds a Ph.D. in Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Michigan (1997) and has held academic positions at Princeton University, University of Michigan, and institutions in China. His research focuses on comparative ethics, Chinese philosophy (Pre-Qin thought and Buddhist influence on Neo-Confucianism), and German philosophy (Hegel-Marx tradition and phenomenology-hermeneutics movements). He has authored/edited over 30 books and 80+ articles in both Chinese and English. Notable works include New Life for Old Ideas (2019) and translations of Wilhelm Dilthey and Friedrich Nietzsche. He has received teaching awards including Clemson's Gentry Award (2017) and led international conferences on comparative civilizations and applied ethics. An serves on editorial boards for journals like Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy and has held visiting professorships in Germany, China, and Taiwan.
Education highlights include a visiting scholar role at Amsterdam University (1987-88) and M.A./B.A. from Fudan University (1985/1982). His current project explores cyclicality concepts in Qin-Han China. Teaching spans ancient/modern Chinese philosophy, comparative philosophy, and language courses. Administrative roles include Interim Chair of Languages (2011-2013) and director of Clemson's China Summer Program since 2001.
