Yanlin Shi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics at Macquarie University since July 2017. Previously, he worked at the Australian National University (2014–2016) and NSW Education Standards Authority (2016–2017). He holds a PhD in Statistics from ANU and an undergraduate degree from Zhejiang University's Chu Kochen Honors College. His research focuses on financial econometrics, mortality modeling, time series analysis, and business analytics.
Education: PhD in Statistics (ANU), BSc from Zhejiang University. Research interests include long memory processes, regime-switching models, mortality forecasting, and actuarial applications of machine learning. He has published over 60 articles in top journals like Demography, Journal of Banking and Finance, and Insurance: Mathematics and Economics.
His work often bridges econometric theory with practical applications in finance, insurance, and public policy. Notable contributions include modeling residential aged care length-of-stay dynamics, mortality forecasting with global linkages, and volatility analysis using regime-switching frameworks. He leads the Data Horizons Research Centre and teaches courses in actuarial science and statistics that contribute to professional exemption credits.
Awards: FSA (Society of Actuaries, top-ranked exams), FIAA, CERA, CStat, FHEA. His research has influenced aged care policy through studies on length-of-stay patterns and international mortality projections.
