Yanfei Gao is Professor and Associate Department Head at the University of Tennessee's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Tickle College of Engineering. He leads research in analytical/computational mechanics, small-scale mechanical behavior, and failure analysis of advanced materials. His work bridges fundamental science with applications in aerospace, energy, and manufacturing sectors.
Education includes BS in Engineering Mechanics/Computer Science from Tsinghua University (1999) and MA/PhD from Princeton University (2001, 2003). Postdoctoral training occurred at Brown University (2003-2005) before joining UT/ORNL in 2005.
Research focuses on:
- Nanoscale deformation mechanisms in structural materials
- Failure prediction under extreme conditions
- Computational modeling of material behavior
- Thin film heterostructure design
- Friction and contact mechanics
Awards and honors:
- 2015 College of Engineering Professional Promise Award
- 2013 & 2010 Research Fellow Awards
- 2010 Chancellor's Research Achievement Award
- R&D 100 Award for superconducting wire technology
