Yan Zhou is an Assistant Professor of Instruction and Chinese Language Program Placement Coordinator at Northwestern University. She holds a Ph.D. in Chinese Linguistics from UCLA (2022). Her research employs methods from conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, and corpus linguistics to study linguistic practices in social interactions, including classrooms and media discourses. Current projects explore the timing and multimodal design of speech acts in Chinese, with applications to language teaching. She collaborates internationally on the Analysis of Multilingual Pandemic Narratives project.

Her research interests focus on the intersection of linguistics and pedagogy, emphasizing inclusive teaching strategies. She has taught at institutions including Beijing Normal University, Bucknell University, and Princeton in Beijing.
