Yan Xu is a Scientia Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Business School, specializing in taxation law. She joined UNSW in September 2019 after serving as a tenured Associate Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law. Her academic journey includes prestigious fellowships at Columbia Law School, University of Cambridge, New York University, and the University of Melbourne.
Dr. Xu earned her PhD in Law from The University of Hong Kong, MSc in Taxation from The University of Oxford, and LLB & MPhil in Law from Wuhan University. Her educational background reflects her deep expertise in both Chinese and international tax systems.
Her research focuses on critical contemporary tax issues including GST/VAT law in the digital economy, international taxation frameworks, environmental taxation policies, and the historical development of tax systems. She examines how taxation intersects with climate change mitigation efforts and green energy transitions, exploring how fiscal policies can drive sustainable economic transformation. Her work on indirect taxation in digital economies has positioned her as a leading expert in this rapidly evolving field.
Dr. Xu has published extensively in top-tier journals including the British Tax Review, Canadian Tax Journal, International and Comparative Law Quarterly, and the Journal of Environmental Law. She served as sole editor of the groundbreaking book 'VAT in the Digital Era' (Oxford University Press, 2023), which analyzes critical issues in international GST/VAT law in the digital age.
