Yan Liu is a full Professor in the Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science at the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering. He serves as Director of the USC Machine Learning Center and holds courtesy appointments in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering and the Quantitative and Computational Biology Department. Liu received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on machine learning for time series, physics-informed AI, and interpretable models, with applications in health, sustainability, and social media. He has served as editor-in-chief of TPAMI, board member of ICLR, and conference chair for ICLR 2023 and ACM KDD 2020.
Key research achievements include developing AI models for cancer treatment prediction (2024), analyzing misinformation on social media (2023), and advancing physics-informed machine learning frameworks. His lab, the Melady Group, emphasizes foundational ML research and real-world applications. Notable awards include the NSF Career Award (2013).
